One of the most famous Sherlock Holmes stories, its a thriller in which Holmes faces the beast of Dartmoor in Yorkshire.Holmes is approached to secure the safety of young Sir Henry Baskerville, who has inherited the estate of Baskerville Hall on the moor after the death of his uncle Sir Charles Baskerville in somewhat uncertain circumstances. The legend of the huge killer dog which haunts the moors combined with the chilling thrill of the vast expanse of desolate moor and marshland, and the fact that the older Sir Baskerville has passed away under suspicious circumstances is enough to whet Holmess appetite. He accepts the case with alacrity and yet is to spend almost half of the movie not present at all he sends Dr Watson as a bodyguard to Baskerville Hall with Sir Henry, and it is Watson who conducts most of the investigation in the initial stages, sending with great dedication detailed and regular reports to Holmes, who he believes to still be in Baker Street. And most certainly investigation needs to be done. Is there really a large dog out on the moor, ready to kill at any turn? The blood curdling wails that are heard on the moor certainly suggest that something eerie is out there. What secrets do the housekeeper and her husband the butler hold? Is Stapleton really just an anthropologist as he states? Is his rather disturbing sister innocent? Why does Dr Mortimer not give the full truth, even though he is the one who has asked Holmes to take the case? What part does the escaped convict have to play in it all? Who is the man hiding out on the moor? All these questions and more are answered as the plot unfolds to a thrilling climax. The film will be liked by those who know Sherlock Holmes and love him, and by those that are new to his adventures. If you are a lover of action then this is for you the film moves quickly along, punctuated by Holmes and Watsons observations. I find that I can watc h this movie time and time again and each time I pick up some previously unobserved detail, which you now realize has a part to play in the outcome. The story in itself is by no means classic Holmes. For one thing, as already stated, the detective himself spends half of the movie absent and leaves Watson in charge (perhaps to lengthen the story, which is the first full book length Holmes story?). For another thing, Watson is kept in the dark, and in other stories this is not the case - readers of other Holmes stories often use scraps fed to Watson to try and solve the mystery themselves. But its a good, suspense thrilled movie and is well worth watching. However, as happened with myself, lovers of Holmes may not be too willing to accept Richard Roxburgh in the part. This is not a problem those who are not acquainted with the super sleuth will have because those of us who are have formed a picture in our heads of what Holmes should look like. Therefore, you might say that any actor would have a hard time being accepted in the role. I did find Roxburghs accent to be irritating and again not how I would have expected Holmes to talk. Rather then getting an Australian with a put on accent to play the part, I would have preferred to see somebody like Pierce Brosnan in the role. And I would have liked to see the classical pipe and deerstalker hat that we associate with Holmes more than I saw evidence of the drug habit, which I believe should have been left out of the movie. In Holmes day, such substances were legal and available from the corner drugstore in this day and age, they are not, and this sets a bad example and even seems to impl y that some of Holmes genius is due in part TO the habit. But Roxburgh did carry the role in an authoritative way and a rather large forehead exacerbates the description that has been applied to Holmes in the past that of a disembodied mind. However, the movie does show that he can also be a man of action particularly where he manhandles the cab driver to get information regarding the mans customer. This is not something I remember in the books and was a bit taken aback to see this side of Holmes displayed here. Roxburgh does not bring any of the quirks or mannerisms to the part that we would expect of Holmes. There is no doubt in my mind that a more convincing, stronger Holmes would have turned a good movie into a great one. I liked Ian Hart as Watson. He played the part as solid, dependable, reliable, and also quite intensely human a person to whom we can relate in the company of the clever Holmes. The part of Watson is a foil to that of Holmes, and Hart brought this off well. Without such a person, the viewer could end up feeling rather stupid, especially in this particular Holmes story when much is revealed right at the very end. The humanity of Watson is very important and is well displayed in various scenes in this, particularly when Watson stands up to Holmes and instructs him not to keep him in the dark. There are two classics of English literature who I think Hart is ideal as one, the ever dependable Watson, the other the solidly reliable Dr James Herriot the veterinary surgeon. Richard E Grant is excellent as Stapleton, although there are some who feel that he would have been a better Holmes than Roxburgh. Stapleton portrays himself as an innocent, merely a resident of the moors with nothing more to hide, although, as with everyone in this movie there is more to him than meets the eye. Watson picks up on this secrecy almost immediately upon meeting him and adopts a manner of reserve. This in turn is noticed by Stapleton who praises Watson on his caution. The secrecy surrounding the character is added to upon Watsons meeting Stapletons sister, who alludes to things and then reverts to normal conversation in the presence of her brother. Grants attitude and manner of speaking helps to add to this air of mystery, as do surreptitious glances that he casts about him. The production values are wonderful, the costumes striking and the locations authentic-looking from start to finish. The widescreen format is used to full effect here. Never before has the moor looked as atmospheric or menacing in any film version and the opening, which alternates between shots of testimony at the inquest into Sir Charles death and his post-mortem, is a wonderful sequence that sets the gritty tone for the film. Baker Street, represented by Canning Street in Liverpool, is an extraordinary exterior that looks perfect. There is no doubt about it; this is the best looking version of The Hound ever to be made for television (Prepolec, 2006). The hound itself is huge, intimidating and scary a mixture between animatronics and CGI, and the chilling atmosphere around it is enhanced to great effect when it makes its first physical appearance at a sance being conducted by Dr Mortimers wife. This is all in all a satisfying, entertaining film. Dont miss it on SABC 7 at 8pm on Saturday! Set Theory and How It Is Used Set theory is a fundamental concept throughout all of mathematics.  This branch of mathematics forms a foundation for other topics.   Intuitively a set is a collection of objects, which are called elements. Although this seems like a simple idea, it has some far-reaching consequences.   Elements The elements of a set can really be anything – numbers, states, cars, people or even other sets are all possibilities for elements. Just about anything that can be collected together may be used to form a set, though there are some things we need to be careful about. Equal Sets Elements of a set are either in a set or not in a set. We may describe a set by a defining property, or we may list the elements in the set. The order that they are listed is not important. So the sets {1, 2, 3} and {1, 3, 2} are equal sets, because they both contain the same elements. Two Special Sets Two sets deserve special mention. The first is the universal set, typically denoted U. This set is all of the elements that we may choose from. This set may be different from one setting to the next. For example, one universal set may be the set of real numbers whereas for another problem the universal set may be the whole numbers {0, 1, 2,...}.   The other set that requires some attention is called the empty set. The empty set is the unique set is the set with no elements. We can write this as { } and denote this set by the symbol ∅. Subsets and the Power Set A collection of some of the elements of a set A is called a subset of A. We say that A is a subset of B if and only if every element of A is also an element of B. If there are a finite number n of elements in a set, then there are a total of 2n subsets of A. This collection of all of the subsets of A is a set that is called the power set of A. Set Operations Just as we can perform operations such as addition - on two numbers to obtain a new number, set theory operations are used to form a set from two other sets. There are a number of operations, but nearly all are composed from the following three operations: Union – A union signifies a bringing together. The union of the sets A and B consists of the elements that are in either A or B.Intersection - An intersection is where two things meet. The intersection of the sets A and B consists of the elements that in both A and B.Complement - The complement of the set A consists of all of the elements in the universal set that are not elements of A. Venn Diagrams One tool that is helpful in depicting the relationship between different sets is called a Venn diagram.  A rectangle represents the universal set for our problem.  Each set is represented with a circle.  If the circles overlap with one another, then this illustrates the intersection of our two sets.   Applications of Set Theory Set theory is used throughout mathematics. It is used as a foundation for many subfields of mathematics. In the areas pertaining to statistics, it is particularly used in probability. Much of the concepts in probability are derived from the consequences of set theory. Indeed, one way to state the axioms of probability involves set theory.

What is expected of me? is a question most commonly asked by every student. Students who differ in personality, interests, learning styles, and levels of thinking can be seen in any class. In such a situation and for the smooth running of a class, certain rules, regulations, moral standards, and procedures are created and have to be strictly followed by students in classrooms. The guidelines that have to be followed by students to maintain acceptable classroom environment are known as Classroom Etiquettes. Classroom rules can be made by the institution or by the instructor; however, it is always helpful to maintain appropriate classroom situations. As a student, this is expected of you irrespective of: Who you are Where you are from What your ability is What your motivational level is What your personality is A student is expected to maintain and follow rules and regulations which are put forward for the best of all. Top Classroom Etiquettes Arrive to Class on Time There are always going to be days when a previous professor keeps you late, or you wake up late, or it takes you too long to find a parking space, but the point here is do not be habitually late to class. Whether you mean it or not, regularly arriving late to the class, signals a level of disrespect to the class and the teacher. If you have problems getting to class on time, find a way to solve them. And on those rare days when you do arrive late, remember to enter the room by excusing yourself softly and quietly and not make a big scene. Turn Off Your Cell Phone Most beepers and cell phones can be set to vibrate rather than produce a sound, so they should be less of a problem.   These devices should be turned off if they cannot be set to a silent mode.   Some phones are pretty noisy even on vibrate.   Of course, you should not answer your cell phone during class.   If you are expecting a really important call (e.g., wife going into labor, call for an interview), then it might be a good idea to inform the instructor before class so its less of a distraction if you leave the classroom to take the call. You should also sit near a door so you can make an unobtrusive exit. Computers and recording equipment Few students ask permission to take their class notes on a laptop or to record the lectures.   This depends on the circumstances and you should definitely ask the instructor in advance.   Researchers have found that it has been impractical in most cases to use a computer to take meeting notes and it would not be allowed to record most meetings.   Thus, learning to take good notes is an important skill to have even outside the classroom.   More students seem to be using laptops for class.   Unfortunately, if a wireless connection is available in classrooms, the students may surf websites or perform tasks other than taking class notes with their laptops.   Again, such activities are likely distracting to those around the student (e.g., those sitting behind who see something unrelated to the course on the computer screen) as well as the instructor.  Ã‚  Ã‚   Be Attentive in Class If you are going to make the effort to arrive on time and be in class, you should also make the effort to stay actively engaged in class. Some professors report observing students reading the student newspaper or even reading a textbook for a different class; some report seeing students completing homework for their next class. Flaunting your boredom or disinterest in the class is rude and very inappropriate. Finally, avoid falling asleep in class or staring out the window. Sitting in the Class Inappropriate ways of sitting is another poor etiquette shown by students. Some students stretch as if they are out of bed. Putting legs apart is very annoying. Laying with the head on the desk, as if somebody is reading a bedtime story. Yawning, is equal to saying to the instructor, please cut off I cannot stand your boring class. Do Not Bring Food or Drink to Class In many classroom buildings, food is not even allowed, so youre not only displaying poor etiquette, but actually breaking a rule. Make time outside of class to have a meal or a snack not in class. Many professors do tolerate drinks, such as water, coffee, soda but make certain of the professors policy before bringing your drink to class. Contribute to the Class Discussion When Appropriate Just about all professors appreciate a strong dialogue in the classroom, but not when the comments are unwanted or inappropriate. Do respond when the professor seeks input or asks for questions or discussion. Dont interrupt the professor or another student, and dont dominate the discussion let other people have a chance to talk and contribute to the dialogue. Talking in Class   There are two aspects to this.   First, conversations need to stop when the instructor is ready to begin class.   This certainly doesnt mean that there has to be dead silence the second the instructor enters the room.   Most instructors take a few moments to arrange books and notes, check or prepare computer or other equipment, or have brief conversations with teaching assistants or students.   Even so, when the instructor makes it clear that class is starting, other conversations should be quickly finished.   Second, there may be times when one needs to ask a question of a person sitting nearby.    Brief, and quiet, comments along the lines of What was that point? or Was that argument correct? are certainly understandable.   You should not, however, carry on conversations in class.   This is true even if they happen to be related to the topic.   Even if such conversations are relatively quiet and do not seem to disturb anyone nearby, they can be distracting to the instructor, not to mention rude. Dress code There are particular problems in classes related to the dress. This is not always about the fashion, but about the local culture. No dress that may disrespect the culture and values of the nation should be worn by a student. The dress should not signal any disrespect to the instructor. No micro/minis or revealing clothes for the females and no boxer shorts or shorts above the knees and half selves tea-shirts revealing their arm pits are allowed in the classrooms. ADU has a clear dress code that students must follow. Therefore, any style of dress that violates the Universitys dress code policy should be avoided. Addressing the Professor Properly Many faculties are insulted when students do not address them properly. Many full-time university faculty members have a doctorate degree and have earned the right to be addressed as Dr. Smith rather than Mr. or Ms. Smith, but Mr. or Ms. should mainly be used for those without a PhD or other doctorate.   This will mostly apply to TAs or new faculty who may not have finished their degree.   Doctor will be correct for anyone with a doctorate. Professor is correct for anyone with a doctorate on the faculty.   That will include all ranks of professor (assistant, associate, full, and visiting).   The choice between Doctor and Professor is mainly a matter of personal choice.   Your best clue will likely be how the person lists his or her name on the syllabus or during an initial introduction.   Also, many TAs will invite you to refer to them by their first names. (Professors might as well.)   Thats fine, but until you are invited to do so be a bit more formal.   Better to b e invited to be less formal than to be corrected for being overly familiar. Stay for the Entire Class There may be times when you need to leave class early, but do not make a habit of doing so. If you do need to leave class early, the best solution is to alert the professor ahead of time and then discretely leave the classroom so as not to disturb the other students. If you do need to leave early pick a seat close to the door to make a quick and quiet exit. Avoid Signaling, Sending Signs That Class Time is up Students must not attempt to signal that class is over by shutting their books loudly, unzipping and zipping their bags and otherwise making noises that class time is complete. Some students actually get up and walk out of class. Of course, some professors make a habit of going over class time, but most of them know how to tell time and most of them have a watch or other ways to tell time. It is presumptuous and rude for the student to tell the professor that class is over. If your professor does seem to have a problem with ending class on time, chat with him or her outside of class especially if it is making you late for your next class. Contact the Professor When You Have to Miss Class When you have to miss class for legitimate reasons or when you miss class because of illness, try to contact the professor and inform him/her of your absence. You may even be able to obtain copies of lecture notes or schedule a meeting during office hours to discuss what you missed. Do not, however, ask the professor in class to go over material you missed (for whatever reasons). And when alerting the professor about having to miss a class, do not begin the conversation with the awful question, are we doing anything important in the next class because I have to miss it? (If the professor was not planning to do anything, the class would probably be canceled, right?) Proper classroom etiquette should be common sense for most students. Being courteous will predispose the professor to like/respect you and set an example for other less-informed students. *******************************************

Fly-Boys, by James Bradley :: Review of Fly-Boys

Fly-Boys written by James Bradley, reveals the truth about nine young American World War II pilots that were shot down over the island of Chichi Jima. Out of the nine pilots one was rescued by a submarine. The other eight were captured by the Japanese, and disappeared. After the war the American government, along with the Japanese, covered up everything that had happened on Chichi Jima. Which had meant that the lives of the eight Fly-Boys were erased. Only the American and Japanese governments knew that the pilots survived the war. In this novel James Bradley reveals the story for the first time. Although, critics might disapprove on all this information making him seem bias, but in reality it is the truth that has just never been discovered. Many Critics, and readers that have reviewed this novel have different opinions on the style of writing that James Bradley chose. Some raise the question â€Å"is Fly-Boys an anti-American book? So far from reading this book I could see why many would think that. It seems as if James Bradley is making a mockery of America. In fact all Bradley is doing here is explaining the truth of our government that he had figured out by intensive research grabbing a plethora of information from untapped government archives containing documents that no one would have ever imagined existed. He is also trying to show how the Japanese got brainwashed into the things they thought, did, and acted upon. In the first few chapters the words chosen seem as if Bradley is praising Japan by giving a lot of information from the Japanese side of things to show how bad the Americans were, â€Å" While America cheered the fliers as its best and brightest, the Japanese had a very different view.....airmen who dropped napalm on defenseless civilians living in paper houses were the non human devils.† I personally think that Bradley is just stating the truth while others would look at this and ponder why would he say this if he is American wouldn't he want to leave all that out to make us look better. The way the author chose to write this was to show both sides of war and not just taking one side. He does say one thing about Japan which praises them and then contrasts it to America making it seem worse from that side.
